Dad's rant for Feb. 1, 2004
The statue in the link below dates from before my time, but is
dedicated to a great hero of Cleveland: Tom L. Johnson. He's sitting
in a heavy chair holding the book "Progress and Poverty." by the
spine. He was mayor of Cleveland and opponent of Republican
"president maker" Marcus Hannah. He was also an advocate for public
power and transportation.
I often saw this statue as a boy on the grand Public Square downtown
Cleveland (it's still there of course). Nearby there is a block of
stone to stand on for free speech like one in London's Hyde Park.
